The United Nation's World Food Programme (WFP) is the largest humanitarian organization saving and changing lives worldwide.

WFP brings life-saving relief in emergencies and use food assistance to build a pathway to peace, stability and prosperity for people recovering from conflict, disasters and the impacts of climate change. The agency is operational in 120 countries and territories around the world where it assisted an estimated 152 million people in 2023 alone. Operations of this scale involve large scale processing of personal data to establish beneficiary identities and to deliver assistance.

WFP is committed to the protection of the fundamental right to privacy. In this context, recent years have seen increasing efforts by WFP to ensure appropriate processing of personal data. a Privacy Impact Assessment is one of the first steps in this regard. Nagra has conducted Privacy Impact Assessments for WFP in three countries – Afghanistan, Pakistan and Ethiopia – all with complex operating environments.

Conducted field visits, where possible given ongoing crises, to interview WFP staff, partners and communities that WFP serves. Semi structured interviews conducted in multiple languages as appropriate for the location.

⸺ Mapping and analysis

Mapped and analysed findings from interviews and desk review of WFP and partner documents. Conducted workshops with WFP staff to train field offices on data protection and verify findings.

 

⸺ Impact Assessment

Provided an assessment of the impact of personal data processing on communities, staff and WFP operations. Provided recommendations for improvements and addressing challanges.
